Clydebank Hotel - Launch Lineage — Past to Future
This innovative concept is deliberately rooted in Clydebank’s most iconic moment: the launch of the QE2 from John Brown’s yard, at this very stretch of river. The building’s cantilevered prow aligns with the geometry of the historic launch berth; the layered “ribbons” read as hull lines and slipway timbers, and the ground plane terraces suggest a slipway sliding to the Clyde. At dusk the soffits glow like floodlights on a launch night, while a transparent café at the prow recalls crowds gathered at the bow.
Yet the project is not nostalgia. It looks to the future of Clydebank: an all-electric, low-carbon hotel with blue-green infrastructure, bird-friendly glazing and flood-resilient public realm. It activates the promenade year-round, supports the evening economy, and forges links with the college and leisure centre. By translating the spirit of the launch into a contemporary civic landmark, the hotel celebrates the town’s shipbuilding heritage while signalling the next chapter of waterfront renewal.
